Every year, Gateway's Junior Board sponsors a therapeutic drum clinic for the youth in our programs at our Airport Highway location. On the evening of August 11, 2014, Gateway staff, Junior Board and Board members were invited to a recital to see the amazing progress of the youth they serve! (Pictured here from left to right are Gateway Junior Board members Mallori Kenyon, Mary Kate Goswick, and Dwight Daniel along with Walker Wright and Junior Board Members Jacoby Kindred and Karlicia Brown).
Since 2009, Walker Wright of Rejoicing Rhythms has come to our Gateway campus with his colorful drums in all different shapes and sizes to bring music and joy through creative self-expression to our residential youth, and this year was no different. This year the youth preformed a recital for Gateway staff and Junior Board members on Monday, August 11th. The youth are always nervous at first about performing for their recital, but through the gentle guidance of Mr. Wright along with the rhythms of the drums and the music, you see smiles erupt on the faces of all of the youth one by one. You can see their confidence build as they joyfully perform for their eager audience. Through the drums and the self-expression they allow for our youth, we feel them telling us their stories without words. And at the end, as we hear the youth play to the sound of Bob Marley singing "every little thing is going to be alright", we feel them telling us that they believe those words and, so too, do we as well. We thank Walker Wright each and every year for bringing that magic to us and for re-energizing us all with the beats and rhythms of his drums.
As many of you may already know, the youth we serve on campus at Gateway come to us from environments of severe abuse and neglect. Restoring these youth emotionally, mentally, physically, psychologically, and academically and preparing them for the future is a time-consuming and costly endeavor. With the help of our donors and Board and Junior Board, we are able to provide activities like this drum clinic to help create a caring environment in which these teens can both recover from their past and embark on a path to a productive future. Thank you so much for supporting Gateway's mission of hope!
